GUAVITA LAKE TOUR

After breakfast, your tour starts travelling to Guavita Town. It is 75 km toward Northeast of Bogota on the North motorway. Guatavita was rebuilt on higher ground in the middle 60’s due to the construction of the Tominé Reservoir, which flooded the area of the town. There, you will visiting the Guatavita Lagoon that has a historic and recognized legend “el dorado”. The lake is circular and about a quarter mile in diameter, formed by what appears to be a crater. The earlier theories of the crater’s origin being a meteorite impact, volcanic cinder, or limestone sinkhole are now discredited. The most likely explanation is that it resulted from the dissolution of underground salt deposits from an anticline, resulting in an unusual kind of sinkhole. Long ago, this sacred lake was associated with Indian rituals involving gold. The name of the lake is derived from Chibcha (language of the Muisca people) gwa: mountain or gwata, gwate: high elevation, or gwatibita: high mountain peak; hence a pool at a high mountain peak. You will stop here for Lunch. Continuing the on, you will see Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, which has one of the most content-rich tourist sightseeing with a great architectural, archaeological and cultural sites.
